About the Cook Out Southern 500
First run in 1950, the Southern 500 at Darlington was NASCAR's first 500-mile race and remained the only one until the Daytona 500 arrived in 1959. A crown-jewel event held on Labor Day weekend from 1950 to 2003, it returned to its traditional Labor Day date in 2015 after a decade in May. Darlington's egg-shaped oval is nicknamed the "Track Too Tough to Tame."
